The Huskies broke among the most storied milestones in American sport on December 21 by beating Florida State University 93-62 for their 89th win in a row.
That victory topped the 88-game win streak by the University of California at Los Angeles men’s team from 1971-74.
That streak, by UCLA teams coached by the legendary John Wooden, had been the gold standard amongst US collegiate programs that develop NBA talent.
Connecticut’s women had not lost since April 6, 2008, also to Stanford inside the US national collegiate tournament semi-finals.
This time, Stanford’s women stretched their house win streak to 52 games, in no way trailing in toppling the Huskies.
“We just didn’t play like ourselves,” Huskies coach Geno Auriemma mentioned.
“Give credit to Stanford. They played properly. They took us out of everything we attempted to do.”
The Huskies, who defeated Stanford 53-47 in final season’s national finals, have a better appreciation of their achievement now that the streak is over, Auriemma said.
“You can appreciate even more now what it took to obtain to there,” he said.
“At some point reality had to set in. I’m not destroyed about it. Winning that numerous games in a row, it is unheard of.”
